The Harley Davidson XG750R marks the return of a racing legend after over four decades, continuing a legacy of powerful machines that dominate flat track racing. It matters because it grew out of the same Street platform riders know from the [Harley-Davidson XG750](/pages/7-facts-about-the-harley-davidson-xg750/), then pushed that liquid-cooled engine family into a purpose-built dirt-track direction.

Racing legends acknowledged that this was the first new Harley to compete in flat track in over forty years. The previous machine, the aluminum XR750, had dominated AMA flat track for more than four decades before reaching its competitive limits.

While in many categories, if a product becomes obsolete, it will no longer be seen or used in the market. But in racing, when a product becomes obsolete, it does not mean it can no longer be used or that it cannot win races. It simply means the product has reached its limits and cannot be modified further. Thus, the next generation of motorcycles is designed with new possibilities.

The new version, the Harley Davidson XG750R, features improvements over its predecessors, including a wider limit range. Experts consider this motorcycle geared to accelerate off corners, reaching peak power just in time for the next corner. This requires overrevving the engine, a challenge for older models like the XR750, which struggled with this aspect.

The rear wheel horsepower is estimated to be around 95-100, essential for competitive performance on the track.

The Harley Davidson XG750R is a liquid-cooled 60-degree V-twin engine with a bore and stroke of 87.75 x 66mm, displacing 798cc, inspired by Harley's street line. It features four valves per cylinder, operated by a single chain-driven overhead cam. The engine uses a pair of forked roller rockers with screw and nut clearance adjusters. A rules concession was granted for the intake system, which needed adjustments to deliver competitive airflow.

The exhaust system is stainless steel, and the intake valves are made of titanium. The cylinders are lined with iron, and to clear the cam, the non-cam drive side of each head has a central spark plug thread set at a specific angle.

While the street model had a successful run, the changes introduced in the XG750R are necessary to keep the Harley race competitive. These updated versions are essential for maintaining the success of American flat track racing.
