Ride any stretch of the Parks Highway and you keep your eyes up, because the brown bear owns this country. It is the reason we made it the mark. Alaska holds over 30,000 grizzlies, more than anywhere else in the country, and the animal earns every inch of that in the silhouette: shoulder hump forward, dense fur worked with dry-brush strokes, the weight and scale a cartoon grizzly always misses. We set it against the ALCAN ribbon running off toward the Alaska Range, Denali capped in permanent snow behind it, and the eight gold stars of the state flag drawn in 1927 by a 13-year-old named Benny Benson, worked in as a distressed badge.
