The mark you wear over all of it is the male Northern Cardinal - scarlet from crest to tail, black mask sharp around the bill, state bird since 1929. The all-red plumage hits hard on dark fabric, nothing complicated, just a bird that looks like it means something. Along the bottom runs 'Mother Road,' Steinbeck's name for Route 66, the phrase every rider staging the westward run already carries in their head.
