Down in Invercargill, at the bottom of the South Island, there is a hardware store on Dee Street where a 1920 Scout sits behind glass with a land-speed record that still has not been beaten. Burt Munro built it in his backyard over 46 years, then rode it to Bonneville at age 68 and proved that patience and a good set of hands beat a factory budget every time. Every February riders come from across the country and further to race on Oreti Beach's black sand, the same stretch where Munro trained. The roads out of Invercargill - through the Southern Alps and into Fiordland's cliff-wall fjords - are their own argument for getting here. The Kiwi, the Scout, and the Black Sand of Oreti

Start where the riding is. Every February the beach speed run pulls riders down to Oreti's black sand, and the roads out of Invercargill climb into the Southern Alps and drop toward the fjord walls of Milford Sound. That is the country printed here, and the mark that ties it together is the kiwi. We drew it in side profile with the long curved bill forward, because the beak reads from across the room and that is the whole bird. New Zealand riders claim that name for themselves, so it belongs on the chest. The bird has more in common with a backyard land-speed farmer than the tourists know: flightless by the usual rules, and it never mattered. The banner carries 'Kiwi', worn plain.
