At the northern edge of Essen, two 55-metre steel towers stand against the sky in perfect Bauhaus geometry - the Doppelbock headframes of Zeche Zollverein, the last pit to close in 1986 and the most photographed industrial monument in Germany. The colliery grounds attract 1.5 million visitors a year; the ones who roll in on classic motorcycles know it as the natural anchor of any Ruhrgebiet run. Its twin steel headframes are the mark on every piece here - the Shaft XII Doppelbock, two upright lattice towers that mean Essen anywhere a rider says the name. We drew the silhouette down to its bones: structural steel, open sky, nothing decorative it did not earn in the shaft. Around the towers sits the Schlegel und Eisen, the crossed hammer and pick that is the valley's mark. The banner closes on Glückauf, the greeting that means 'may the shaft open safely', the word Ruhrgebiet riders still trade when they split off after a run. Materials & Who It's For

This one is built for three buyers: the Essen local who grew up in the Zollverein's shadow and wants a piece that says it without a tourist photo; the Ruhrgebiet rider who runs the Route der Industriekultur circuit and wants something to mark it; and the cultural traveler who came for the Red Dot museum and left as a convert. Tees are heavyweight 5.3oz ring-spun cotton, side-seamed and pre-shrunk. Hoodies are 8.0oz cotton-poly fleece with double-needle stitching at the stress points.
