Coyote State, Badlands Road

Ride the Badlands Loop and a coyote is usually the only thing watching you take the curves. That is the mascot we wear here - South Dakota's state animal since 1949, lean and alert in side profile on a badlands outcrop, ears up and tail low. Lakota oral tradition runs the coyote as a clever, adaptable figure, never the obvious choice and always the right one. We set it above the whole ride: the Loop Road working through eroded pinnacles, the prairie floor opening west with the Black Hills dark on the horizon, and a male ring-necked pheasant in full copper-and-white plumage standing in the foreground grass, the state bird since it reached Spink County in 1908. The Coyote State banner carries the old road nickname along the base.
