Racing legends acknowledged that this was the first new Harley to compete in flat track in over forty years. The previous machine, the aluminum XR750, had dominated AMA flat track for more than four decades before reaching its competitive limits.

The Harley Davidson XG750R is a liquid-cooled 60-degree V-twin engine with a bore and stroke of 87.75 x 66mm, displacing 798cc, inspired by Harley’s street line. It features four valves per cylinder, operated by a single chain-driven overhead cam. The engine uses a pair of forked roller rockers with screw and nut clearance adjusters. A rules concession was granted for the intake system, which needed adjustments to deliver competitive airflow.

The exhaust system is stainless steel, and the intake valves are made of titanium. The cylinders are lined with iron, and to clear the cam, the non-cam drive side of each head has a central spark plug thread set at a specific angle.
